Chan Master Nan Huaijin:
In my entire life, I have always had very good conditions for learning Dharma. I am sharing my life experience with you. It shows that I have often engaged in generosity in my previous lives. In this life, even if I had a little understanding or knowledge, I always thought of sharing it with others.
I exerted myself fully to share my knowledge without holding back anything. My own fear is that the recipients couldn’t comprehend
what I am saying, so I think of all ways to make them understand. It can be said that I have carried out the
adage, “Nothing known is not told, nothing told is incomplete.”
Therefore in my entire life learning Dharma, whether Vajrayana or Zen, I have
no secrets. If someone is willing to
learn, I will not hesitate to teach. If
I keep some secret, hold back something for myself, that would be
selfishness. But I have not done so! If I know something, I will share it with the
right person.
Thinking back my whole life since the age of 12 till now, whatever I wished to
learn, whether it be martial arts or any other skills, teachers would seek me
out. I do not need to look for teachers. I often meet people telling me, “I have to
teach this to you!” I said, “Teacher! I
cannot learn this, I do not have the time or energy to learn so much,” But he
would insist, “No, no! I must absolutely teach this to you!” In this way, I received much knowledge. This is called Dharma affinities or conducive
conditions with Dharma.
Why does a person have such conducive Dharma conditions? If we talk about cause and effect, it goes
back to many lives of having being generous with others. Then Dharma conditions naturally arise. These good conditions naturally come to you…
