Qualities of Lama Achuk Rinpoche

Tulku Asang Rinpoche

Some disciples came to see Lama Achuk Rinpoche and supplicated, “I would like to practice until I become the same as you.”

Lama Rinpoche would say, “Ha! Ha! You are not capable of becoming like me.  From the age of 17, I abandoned worldly possessions, fame, position, relatives, friends, the mental afflictions of desire, anger and ignorance like spit.  Can you do the same? If you can do it, then you will definitely become like me.”  Lama Rinpoche taught this way.

Also, Lama Rinpoche said, “If you want to become the same as me, from the age of 17, I slept at the very most 2 plus hours each night.   Can you do that? If you can do that, you will definitely become like me.”

“I performed the recitations of more than 200 different deity practices everyday.  I have continuously practiced these generation-completion stages without missing a day. Can you do it? If you can’t do it, then you should not say again that you want to become like me.”

Again Lama said, “From the age of 17, I began to follow Tromge Arik Rinpoche, accompanying him like a shadow, can you do this?”

In a similar vein, Lama said, “In my entire life, all the downfalls, misdeeds and negative karma were not allowed to continue overnight, they were already confessed and repented.  Can you do it like this?”

Lama said, “Now, all phenomena appears to me as deities and purelands, can you achieve this? Now, all the body’s subtle channels have ripened into deities and syllables, can you do this?  Now, my consciousness aggregate has become the five types of wisdoms, can you do this? I believe you can’t do this.”

“Now, I can emanate hundreds, thousands, millions and billions of emanations in the time it takes to snap the finger to benefit beings in the six realms. Can you do this?”

Lama Rinpoche laughed and said, “Oh, truly pitiful! How ignorant! You wish to be the same as me, can you really become the same as me?  You can’t do it! You only eat, drink and sleep.  Besides this, you have nothing.  You want to become like me. It is not possible.”  This is how Lama Rinpoche said it.

Yes, we often make the aspiration, “Whatever the body, lifespan, fame, qualities etc of you, the qualified Guru, I aspire to become the same.” However, this is only an aspiration. To truly achieve it is really very hard.

(Note: A purpose of this teaching is to subdue the arrogance of beings who take the Guru lightly through their ignorance.)
